How does AI change the role of finance?

AI has the potential to transform finance, but unlocking its value takes more than automation.

From faster insights and continuous planning to accelerated scenario analysis, AI can help finance teams make better, more forward-looking decisions. But scaling AI with confidence also requires transparency, auditability, governance, and human oversight.

The future isn’t AI or humans. It’s about bringing the two together to create a smarter, more scalable finance function.

  1. I think AI can definitely have a meaningful role within finance.

  2. There are efficiencies for repetitive tasks, absolutely.

  3. I think ultimately, though, if you start to think about business impact, as I

  4. talked about before, how can I get faster insights?

  5. Our business is changing, our world's changing.

  6. There's external factors that are changing.

  7. Can I use AI to give me faster insights?

  8. Can I use AI to do more continuous planning?

  9. So my ability to run scenarios more quickly, take in the latest factor that

  10. has changed, is really going to help ultimately in decision-making.

  11. So I think it's a great opportunity.

  12. I think FP&A teams, finance teams have a seat at the table, which is really

  13. important. Now we've got this tool that if used correctly and used properly, can

  14. really go help accelerate the scenario planning, the future-looking

  15. outcomes, and help us make better decisions.

  16. If we think about using AI at scale and confidently using it at scale, I would say

  17. it's a little bit of a work in process, honestly, in terms of a confidence level

  18. for me. I'm confident that we have good oversight right now in terms of how we

  19. manage it, but that needs to continue.

  20. How do we continue to have transparency on what the models are doing?

  21. Can I trace it back? That concept of auditability.

  22. Do I really know where those answers are coming from?

  23. If it's an analyst, I can sit down with that analyst and I can have the

  24. conversation and I can test those assumptions. How can I do that?

  25. I need to make sure I can do that within the models.

  26. And then I also need to make sure that there's governance around it, as I talked

  27. about. So some combination of the models with humans is going to

  28. continue, I think in my mind, to be the model for a while. But that's not enough.

  29. Just like any good finance organization, I think you have to test your assumptions.

  30. You have to make sure that you're thinking about all of the downside risks of using

  31. it, and make sure that you're not ignoring those.

  32. And I think if you continue to do that and if you're diligent, then I have

  33. confidence that we can go use it in a way that can be a real scalable tool that

  34. will really help the organization.
